Iris's Discovery - Part 3

Part 3

Marcus chuckles "alright, I will make more, and I will make sure you get enough food to fully get sated, I know from my own awakening that it empties all your magical energy storage and you will need to fill that up, it is a hunger like no other." he quickly mixes me another glass of that wonderful drink of his and as soon as he taps it and slides it over I down it in one gulp and I can feel its surge and all of it is absorbed by a part of me that is so extremely hungry.

Dave slides over most of his food to me and just eats the powder he was given as he knows that is not going to help me.

Sadly I do not really take the time to truly savour all the flavours of all these different things, my hunger is just too strong and I am really happy when bowls of gel arrive and more of the fruits and such, I keep eating and eating and it feels like a storm inside my stomach is ripping everything I feed it apart, I vaguely see Dave being confused and worried at the same time, his scanning eyes on me as if he is trying to understand what is going on. I am curious what he might be seeing but my mouth is needed for chewing.

After what feels like a really long time of eating crazy much food I finally feel sated, not full, but sated and I can slow down and take a break, I notice that my face is a mess of juices and gels and start to try to lick myself clean almost like a cat, then I smile and my magic makes all the mess lift off my skin and then deposit itself in my mouth and I swallow the curiously flavoured mess and giggle "mmm, I hope I don't have to eat this much every day, or I will be ruined financially." I say jokingly and lean back in the chair "what can you see Dave?" I ask him as he looks at me.

Dave considers and tilts his head a bit "you... um... you have fields in many of your cells, holding quite a bit of energy inside them, like a high energy capacitor, I am worried because... well... if the containment of all that energy failed you would disintegrate into plasma I think, or at least burn into ashes."

I look to Marcus "is that true?" I am not sure if it could be.

"Well you are more powerful than I expected, but even when magical beings die we do not release the energy that way, we take most of it with us as our will shifts focus from our material existence to elsewhere." Marcus says "and even when the fields are collapsed by other magic it rarely manifests as something quite as physical as pure heat."

Dave seems to consider for a while and then smiles "I will trust you Marcus, but know that if she gets hurt by this magic stuff I will hold you personally responsible."

Marcus nods "I understand that, but trust me, she is less easy to harm now than before, look at me with those marvels of technology that are your eyes, as you can see she is a bit more powerful than me, more energy in her body than I can hold myself, but I have quite a bit, if she gets as skilled at using that energy as I am, as efficient, she will be able to surpass me easily, all I have that she does not is experience. Now if she ends up naked in space for some reason she can create a shell of air around her using her magic, and maybe she can even learn the way I leap from one point in space to another, though it is a lot easier for my father's species than my mothers, and Iris is closer to my mother's species, than anything else."

Dave nods "that is good, I just... I want to better understand this stuff."

I consider a bit "now I know of the metal elves, the legend of how they brought faster than light travel to all species, but I have not seen any of them in my travels, and their rumoured trade network does not reach our part of space."

Marcus looks surprised "you don't know? Well, from what I gather you are from Jarek's exodus, a large group of people who did not like the ways of the metal elves and all the crazy aliens sharing their worlds, the ships were equipped with very long range faster than light jump drives and jumped away, nobody knew where you ended up, and our slow exploration and expansion has not quite met with yours yet, we actually thought those jump drives failed and you all were lost. Do you have anything else to fill in from that?"

I try to recall the history "Jarek? So maybe that is the true history then, from the way it is told in our history books the metal elves condemned our people to exile, stuffed us in several large ships with experimental jump drives and sent us away, our arrival was very scary and violent, our ships arrived between two stars that were dancing around each other, ripping hot gas from each other, and over half the fleet was lost in the first few minutes before we managed to make an unsafe jump out from there, arriving at a red dwarf star with just a third of those ships, luckily a world that was just barely within the habitable zone was within reach of our crippled ships and it had survivable atmosphere and we landed or in some cases crashed on the surface, it took several generations before we managed to build our first ships and start exploring from there. Since then we have had several wars and splits into multiple factions that left and founded their own systems, and now we live in a sort of uneasy half peace, with trade."

Marcus considers "yeah the metal elves would not do that, not send you away from your home systems, but they would destroy your warships if you tried to make war, if you did enough annoying things to get their attention, I mean there is still piracy, but only smaller groups, not huge fleets, anything big enough to be a threat are dealt with, also a few races have been isolated in their home systems, because they can't be peaceful and trade." he smiles "even in our space most people do not see many metal elves, they are and have always been rare, in this plane, they originate from elsewhere, at least that is what my mother Pix says. From a very different type of space than ours. They have adapted fairly well, and they created the first faster than light drive in all of known space that did not need magic to operate and they offered that to all species in exchange for them agreeing to peaceful trade and some other rules that would also apply to their own worlds if they agreed, most species did. Maybe you know most of that already."

I smile "not that they came from another space, that is news, but I know they dictated how societies can be structured, preventing central authorities from taxing their subjects in exchange of services and such, I actually like that part, but I think it was one of the things our forefathers might not have liked, they did not like the chaos of such a free society, and all the aliens and such, for a long time we elves were looked down upon as lesser citizens compared to the humans, but that has mostly gone away. What does their space look like?"

Marcus chuckles "I do not know what their space looks like, Pix tried to explain it though, apparently they do not have a vacuum, but rather empty space is filled with some sort of rainbow mist, and solar systems of sorts exist in crystal spheres, and you can travel between those along flows or lanes in the mist, or some such and the metal elves can travel outside the lanes better than most, and not get lost, but there are no stars you can see the same way as there is here, because that mist obscures it, supposedly their home lived deep in the mist not inside a crystal sphere, like nearly all other worlds do. Maybe you can ask Pix later if... actually no when we get out of this system. My garden is almost big enough to use as a jumping off point for my type of faster than light travel, your kind would have issues, according to Caretaker's sensors there is no stillness inside this entire solar system, so you would have to travel slower than light outside the edge of it before you could leave, but I can take your ship with me when I leave, though there are a lot of interesting things to explore inside this system, lots of derelict hulls crashed into asteroids and just floating around like their own little debris fields, I am sure we could find a lot of interesting salvage before we leave. Also I want some of those crystals from around that black hole, if you stretch out and touch them with your mind you can feel their peculiar magical nature, not living magic though, but they can interact with it. Also I plan to bring a lot of this asteroid's stone with me, it is also very peculiar and useful, not only is it rich in minerals and rare elements, but also has exotic magical matter in it, and there is something deep inside this asteroid I can sort of sense, it feels almost like something living, but dormant, sleeping perhaps, I am curious about that."

Dave smiles "we need to finish making the plans for Pix's ship and build it, Caretaker and I worked on a first design, but he said you would be able to advice on more things and I want Pix to get all the things she wants for it."

I laugh "design my own ship, is that really what I am hearing here? You are going to make a ship after my specifications for me, for free?" I ask Marcus.

"You saved my life, and in this system we have a lot of raw materials, just this asteroid has enough to fuel a shipyard for many years, of course you will get a ship like you want, of course I suggest we design it with magic too, like my own ship, it is bigger on the inside, and all the machinery in it is tucked nicely out of the way in shielded pocket spaces, so it can be nice and sleek on the outside and pretty on the inside too, and even if pirates attack or the ship is hit by solar flares or such the sensitive machinery is mostly not touched, nor is the living spaces, as they are not in the same space as the outer hull." Marcus says and smiles "I am actually rebuilding my own ship before I leave, I have many ideas, I think I am going to shape the stone of this asteroid into a hull, it is more robust than anything I have seen before, you have no idea how long it took to make that hangar, first few months I just landed my ship in a large crevice on the asteroid, while slowly working away at it with the mining laser and my magic, I had to develop better equipment to dig through it, so a ship made from it, with a dampening field, would be next to impossible to destroy I think. Might look a bit odd though."

"Can we start work on designing a ship together in virtual space?" I ask as I can see Dave is excited about it "I want to see what Dave and Caretaker made too, I am sure they have some great ideas, Dave knows what I like after all." I say and smile.

"Alright, but I hope you will help me with something soon, I have spotted some interesting things on my scanners and I want to go there, but I am not really a good pilot, so perhaps you can take us out there in my ship later? I do not trust my ship AI to navigate this asteroid field and I did not do much better when I took the controls, I was lucky I had a diplomatic shield to use or even my dampening field protected hull would have been as badly smashed up as your ship was, or worse, she... my ship AI Pix, she even joked with me once we got through it that it seemed like I was trying to hit every asteroid I could." Marcus says and his scales shift a bit in colour looking like he is blushing.

"I would love to fly us around this system, I can't promise not getting some scratches though, this place is insane." I point up at the churning chaos outside. "But you said something about something deep inside this asteroid, can't we check on that first?"

Marcus smiles "the machinery is digging as fast as it can, but it will take several more days to get there, or more, depending on if the stone cooperates or not, sometimes it is easier to dig it, other times really hard, and you can't really tell when, or why. Or at least none of my scanners or magic can, but maybe you could take a look Dave, your scanners seem much more advanced than anything I have."

Dave nods "I will try to see if I can figure it out, not sure if I can though, but I can't claim I have tried to look at all the stone yet, if you two go out there you have to promise to be careful, I would prefer to come with you too, but I can't do that and scan here at the same time."

"Of course you are coming with me, silly, you can scan and such when we come back here to eat and sleep, I don't know if you need that as much as we do, though I want to teach you how to dream later." I say and Dave looks happy about that.

Marcus nods "yeah I would like your amazing scanners with us, you might see things we can't, also Dave is there anything you want from me? I know I have been catering to Iris' desires, but you are my guest too."

Dave seems to consider, then looks to me and back at Marcus again "I have not discussed this with Iris yet, but she is treating me like a lover, and I at least want her to when she is ready have children, and you are like her a magical being, and half metal elf and whatever you are, do you think you would be compatible with her genetically? Marcus smiles "I can't fly in this light atmosphere, but in the gas giant that my father comes from yes, I can fly there, and with magic I can fly in this lighter atmosphere too. We can use magic and genetic engineering techniques to get exactly the parts you like from me and from you and Dave into your children, I also have other genetic data from many other species and we can take what we want form those as well, though we would need live samples for certain abilities, and I do have a few of those too, like your magical ability, it is inherited, but can't be reproduced by only genetics and artificially made cells, you have to let the artificial cells touch the real ones for the fields as Dave calls them to transfer." he brings up an image of a pair of cells and his way of seeing the fields.

Dave says "they look like this for me" and brings up a third representation "what is that part" he points to a complicated thing that is attached to Marcus' representation, that seem to attach to the fields in his one.

"That is the part that is touched by the willpower of the being and manipulates reality through the parts you have represented there." Marcus points to Dave's version.

I giggle as Dave looks a bit bothered that his scan did not reveal all of it to him "is there a way for me to get wings and a tail?" I ask, slightly jokingly, but I also love the way they look "also how do those slits work?"

"My species have pockets of folded space inside us, and those slits access our wing and tail spaces, as for if you can get such... I think so, but it would require us to make a chrysalis and alter your genetics and it will make you helpless for several days as your body transforms. I am not sure you would be comfortable with that. But I know Pix did that she wanted to fly with me and father in our home." Marcus says.

"I have done similar things before when I enhanced myself to add certain advanced bioengineering and biomechanical things to my body, a few of them had me floating in a vat of a month. It is scary, but well worth it, I would have to figure out all the things I want before we do the chrysalis though, I am sure I can find more in the genetics library that I would like." I say and smile "also I was meaning to ask, when I came here there was no gravity in the asteroid, and then when there was gravity it was really strong, why was that so and also why was it so very cold?"

Marcus frowns a bit and looks to Caretaker "you nearly crushed her you know..." he then looks to me "I find the current heat level here a bit warm, I generate more heat than you do, but I can cope with this and much higher heat too, but I am most comfortable with more cool climate, so that is probably why it was cold, also I like to have some gravity, and for me that gravity that was activated is on the lighter end of the spectrum, this gravity we have now is very light, if it was much lighter I could probably fly with my wings even in the lighter atmosphere, but I prefer being more grounded, the asteroid itself surprisingly has zero gravity, something with the exotic matter cancels its mass out when it comes to gravity, so I had to install artificial gravity panels in the living quarters."

Caretaker looks sad about that "I am sorry about not figuring out your ideal gravity sooner, I could tell from your bone structure that you could handle that default gravity setting so I did not bother checking more carefully."

"That is alright Caretaker, also what is with the atmosphere? I am not used to this mixture really, I mean I manage, just... it is odd." I say and smile.

Marcus chuckles "it is the type of atmosphere I prefer too, I could adjust it to what you like, as long as the plants I like can handle it. Anything to make you more comfortable."

"No I am good as is, just curious." I say and smile and look to Caretaker and then to Marcus "so um just curious, you said your mother and ship AI are called Pix right, do they look the same and does Caretaker look like your father? Was he called Caretaker too?"

Marcus smiles and nods "yeah, they look like and have the same names as my parents, I... I like having them around, not that they have the same personality. They just comfort me to have around, you know? Father is the Caretaker, or host of the floating island highest up in the gas giant of our home, where we have made a habitable space for visitors, and hangars for ships. With gravity compensators to make it less oppressive for visitors. He built that after Pix arrived and offered our species to join the trade network and get faster than light travel, he also fell in love with her that day and she found him interesting enough to mate with and she visited frequently for a while, but then grew tired of that world and he did not want to travel, but I and she wanted to so we left. The first thing I am going to do when we leave this system is go see Pix and Caretaker, I miss them. I have been trapped here rather long, but now that I am healthy again I can explore the things I want here and then once the garden is a bit more massive with life I can leave."

"How does that work anyway? I know how regular faster than light works sort of, it requires stillness to launch from and it usually targets something massive and gets caught by that and pulled back to normal space, but from what I can understand with the faster than light magic described in the material you gave me you require life near you and you can only target life, but it did not say anything about how much you need... How long before we can leave?" I ask not that I am in an extreme rush, getting a new ship will more than make up for lost trade and exploration time, and this magic and the computer in my head are invaluable too, I can already not imagine living without them, when I look back at my life before now it felt like I was closed, limited, contained, now it feels like I can do anything, I probably can't do anything, but it feels that way, such enormous freedom and better control of virtual environment and everything. Despite my ordeal and pain of going here I would gladly go through that again, and worse to get what I have now.

Marcus seems to think a while and his eyes sparkle in the light of the black hole "the amount of life we need varies, the more life we have behind us the more safe and certain our jumps are, and the less energy they take, and although I could try to jump with just a small bush left behind I would hurt myself doing so and I might not reach as far as I need and if I get trapped in the void between stars I will be truly doomed. I also want to be able to get back here, so that is another reason I want to leave a large enough garden behind that I can sense it again from across the stars. I also need to make sure I make it an unique signature so I can recognize it. I think I need to just about double the biomass to make that happen, and for that to happen I need more space, and to create more rich soil, once that is done the plants will manage to grow fairly fast, it will take roughly a week after the space is excavated to reach the full biomass we need. I would like to make the garden surround the hangar like a sort of cup, then I can jump directly from inside the hangar and directly to it."

Dave's eyes widen "you have that much precision in your jumps? The normal jump drives are very random when arriving to a system."

I laugh "yeah sometimes to the point of causing accidents or arriving at the wrong star of a binary system, or even out at a massive gas giant or such. It is very unreliable."

Marcus nods "it is not without reason why I work as a courier, and sometimes transport passengers, I am usually faster and less risk prone than most other couriers and ferries, of course I also am more expensive, I can arrive exactly where I want near life, but I can not jump to dead systems, I can not however see anything except for life when jumping, all dead things are invisible to me. Well except magical things, magic can sometimes work instead of life, but it is less reliable. I am worried about one other thing though, and that is I can't see life from here, that means that there are no systems close to this one that have enough life, or maybe this place blocks the view. I know I can see further once I am in the jump space though and I should be able to pick something to jump to then, or at least return us back here. I also plan to build a normal jump drive for each of our two ships, so I should be able to jump us outside the system to the stillness there, and then we can use the regular jump drive to leave from there, but landing that far away from life will cripple me, so I would rather not."

I can tell from what the magical texts he gave me is saying that his type of travel does have its limits even though he also has amazing range and speed, I look at a few other magical methods of travel and try to figure out if we can apply them to ships, there is the teleportation magic, that can work, but mass is an issue then, it is hard enough to teleport just oneself safely, clothes and items make it more complicated and taking even another person with you makes it a whole lot harder, but it does happen in an instant, but you also need to know where you want to go quite well, know where that is in relation to yourself.

Dave speaks up "Marcus, or Caretaker, can you give me a sample of stone that is hard to dig and one that is easy so I can examine those?"

Caretaker nods "of course Dave, I am picking up two samples now" then a small drone comes flying up to Dave "the one in the blue box is hard to dig, the one in the red box is easy to dig, I have no clue why, they are identical to my scans."

Dave opens the boxes and takes the two stone samples out, they are cut into perfect cubes and he looks at them intently "hmmm, can you show me the schematic for your digging device?" he says as he keeps looking at the stone samples.

Caretaker brings up the blueprints for a fairly advanced looking mining laser and the drone that carries it.

Dave makes the image shift as he seeks out the details he is looking for "ah, I think I know how to detect the hard and soft stone, and maybe I can enhance the laser to better dig both, you see the rock has for the lack of a better word a multidimensional polarity, that varies, the softer rock has fewer polarities that resist the laser, if you scanned the rock for the polarity and adjusted the laser to take that into account you can dig all of it as quickly as the soft rock, if you can even adjust the laser to these complex multidimensional polarities that is, I think I can make it somewhat adjustable, but not as much as some parts of this hard stone." he looks to me "is it alright if I share what we know about shield piercing lasers?"

I smile "yes, that is fine, I already learned all that Caretaker knows, they can get some knowledge in exchange for that. Also the magic texts are amazing."

Marcus laughs "let me just share the rest of what I know with you first Iris, maybe you can find more useful information in there. I will give you everything except very personal information." with that I feel an information stream and I let it flow into my mind and quickly sort out things I think Dave can use and send that to him.

"One moment" Dave says and goes completely still and his eyes seem to become glassy like a doll. Then his pupils narrow and widen and he snaps back to the lands of the living and a blueprint appears for a new scanner equipped laser with modulating multidimensional polarity. "That is the best I can do, if I had time to study many samples of stone and try different techniques I could make it better, also that dampening field you use would completely cancel out the laser still, we are lucky the stone does not normally have such a thing."

Caretaker absorbs the blueprint and smiles "thank you Dave, I will create a prototype and test it out, some of the required components are very complex though and it will take me an hour to make one of these so I will let you get back to what you were doing, this will also require my entire attention to make happen... so please excuse me." he says and vanishes and the babies vanish too as he nolonger focuses on maintaining their image in the shared augmented reality, I feel a slight pang of loss as they vanish.
